A Brief History of The Singleton of Glen Ord

Founded in 1838, The Singleton of Glen Ord is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. It was twice ceased during times of famine brought on by wars and it witnessed the historical upheavals, attaining a long heritage over time. Situated in the small village of Muir of Ord with a population of around 3,000, the Singleton of Glen Ord lies within the Easter Ross area of the Scottish Highlands . Transportation is convenient as it only takes 20 minutes Scottish rail from Inverness to Muir of Ord station. Furthermore, a visitor centre was established at the distillery in 1988, which attractted tourists from around the world to come and learn more about its history and production.

The Fertile Black Isle

The Black Isle is well-known for its rich black soil, a highly fertile soil type where darker hue indicates higher organic matter content. Soluable nutrients are readily absorbed by plants upon decomposition, combined with the loose texture of black soil, making it ideal for cultivation, yielding many high quality barley crops every year. This encouraged Glen Ord distillery owners to establish a malting floor and kiln to support local families. From that onwards, Glen Ord became one of the few distilleries in Scotland that is capable to cultivate independently and malt its own barley, ensuring quality control of the malt and overall whisky quality.

Waters Deemed 'Heaven and Earth'

A lot of water are required in the whisky making process for tasks such as washing, fermentation and condensing. The Singleton of Glen Ord draws its water supply from Loch nam Bonnach and Loch nan Eun, described as 'Heaven and Earth Waters'. The purity and mineral richness of these waters attract many salmons, hence salmons became a symbol for The Singleton brand.

Slow Fermentation and Long Distillation

In contrast to other whisky brands that ferment for just 2 to 3 days, The Singleton of Glen Ord is known for its prolonged fermentation of 75 to 80 hours, yielding liquid with lingering malty aromas and rich fruity juices. Additionally, slow distillation for over approximately 110 hours allows extended copper contact such that more impurities are absorbed. This created a smoother body and Singleton's signature silky smooth mouthfeel. Finally, maturation takes place in both sherry and bourbon casks to craft a perfectly balanced Scotch whisky.

The Secret of The Singleton of Glen Ord

To produce an exceptional whisky, no details can be overlooked. From sourcing to long fermentation, from slow distillation process to cask selection and aging - perfection is required at every stage.
